  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg or flax egg
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Optional: 1/4 cup diced bell peppers
  • Optional: 2 tbsp corn kernels

Instructions

  1. Place black beans in a large bowl and mash with a fork, leaving some chunks for texture.
  2. Add BBQ sauce, garlic, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  3. Mix until well combined but not overly smooth.
  4. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape into patties.
  5. Chill the patties in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes if the mixture is soft.
  6. Heat a lightly oiled skillet or grill over medium heat.
  7. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until crispy and heated through.
  8. Remove from heat and let rest briefly before serving.

Notes

  • Drain black beans well to avoid excess moisture.
  • Do not overprocess the mixture to maintain texture.
  • Chilling patties helps them hold together better.
  • Cook on medium heat for even cooking and a crispy exterior.
  • Patties can be stored in the fridge or freezer for meal prep.
