  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon professional red food coloring
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing between each addition.
  4. Mix in vanilla extract and red food coloring until well combined.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  7. Prepare two bowls: one with granulated sugar and one with powdered sugar.
  8. Use a cookie scoop to form dough balls, then roll each in granulated sugar followed by powdered sugar.
  9. Place on prepared baking sheet about 1 inch apart.
  10. Bake for 10 minutes, or until cookies are puffed and cracked but still soft in the center.
  11. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Do not chill the dough; it should be room temperature for best results.
  • Use professional gel food coloring for vibrant red color.
  • Roll cookies in granulated sugar before powdered sugar to prevent melting.
  • Do not overbake; cookies should remain soft in the center.
