Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • Optional: fresh herbs or red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Trim the root end of each onion slightly and peel off the outer skin.
  3. Cut a deep cross into the top of each onion, stopping halfway down.
  4. Place each onion on a sheet of heavy-duty foil.
  5. Insert butter into the center of the onion and sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  6. Wrap the foil tightly around each onion to seal.
  7. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 45–60 minutes until very tender.
  8. Carefully unwrap and serve warm.

Notes

  • Yellow onions work best for balanced sweetness and texture.
  • Wrap the foil tightly to trap steam.
  • Add extra butter when serving for richer flavor.
  • Can be cooked on the grill or campfire using indirect heat.
