Old Fashioned Cabbage Casserole is a creamy, oven-baked comfort dish made with tender cabbage, rich milk and cream sauce, and melted cheddar cheese. This traditional family recipe is perfect for holidays, potlucks, and cozy weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1½ cups milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • ½ cup crushed crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Remove outer leaves from cabbage, rinse thoroughly, core, and chop into bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté until fragrant.
  4. Add chopped cabbage to the skillet and cook for 8–10 minutes until slightly softened.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine milk, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and 1½ cups of shredded cheese. Stir until well blended.
  6. Spread the sautéed cabbage evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Pour the creamy mixture over the cabbage, ensuring even coverage.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup cheese evenly on top, followed by crushed crackers or breadcrumbs.
  9. Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
  10. Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.

Notes

  • Sautéing the cabbage first prevents excess moisture and keeps the casserole creamy.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • For a thicker sauce, whisk 1 tablespoon of flour into the milk mixture before pouring.
  • You can substitute olive oil for butter if preferred.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
