This cozy mulled cider recipe is the perfect spiced drink for fall and holiday gatherings. Made with apple cider, warming spices, and optional garnishes, it’s easy to prepare and can be customized for both non-alcoholic and spiked versions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups apple cider
  • 1 cinnamon stick (or 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground clove or 34 whole cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg or a few grates of whole nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger or 34 fresh ginger slices
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice or 34 whole allspice berries
  • 2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar (optional, to taste)
  • Optional garnishes: orange slices, apple slices, cranberries, cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients except garnishes.
  2. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the cider begins to simmer.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 5 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat and allow the spices to steep in the hot cider for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Strain out the whole spices if used.
  6. Sweeten with honey or brown sugar to taste if needed.
  7. Ladle into mugs, garnish as desired, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use unfiltered apple cider for a richer flavor.
  • Do not boil the cider to avoid losing volume and flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.
  • You can prepare the cider in a slow cooker for parties and keep it on warm.
  • Add 1 oz of brandy, bourbon, or spiced rum per serving for a spiked version.
  • Spices can be steeped overnight in the fridge for stronger flavor.
