Hot cross buns are soft, spiced sweet buns filled with raisins and topped with a traditional cross, commonly enjoyed during Easter.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup raisins or currants
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast in warm milk and sugar.
  2. Mix flour, sugar, salt, and spices.
  3. Add yeast mixture, butter, eggs, and vanilla.
  4. Knead dough until smooth.
  5. Add raisins and knead lightly.
  6. Let dough rise until doubled.
  7. Shape into buns and let rise again.
  8. Pipe cross on top.
  9. Bake at 375°F for 18 to 22 minutes.
  10. Brush with glaze and serve.

Notes

  • Use fresh yeast for best results.
  • Do not overheat milk.
  • Knead properly for soft texture.
