French Toast Casserole is a warm, comforting breakfast bake combining the classic flavors of cinnamon, vanilla, and custard-soaked bread. Perfect for brunch or holiday mornings.

Ingredients

  • Day-Old Bread: Sturdy and slightly stale, absorbs the custard without becoming soggy.
  • Eggs: Create the custard base, adding richness and structure.
  • Milk or Cream: Provides moisture and a soft, fluffy texture.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the sweet, dessert-like flavor.
  • Cinnamon: Adds warmth and a cozy, spiced flavor.
  • Brown Sugar: Caramelizes on top, adding sweetness and texture.
  • Butter: Ensures a golden, rich top layer.

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into cubes and layer in a greased baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and press lightly to soak.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Mix brown sugar and softened butter, then sprinkle over the soaked bread.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the top is golden and the custard is set.
  8. Let the casserole cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread to avoid a mushy texture.
  • Allow the casserole to rest after baking for easier slicing.
  • Top with syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream before serving.
