Fluffy French Bread is a soft, tender loaf with a golden crust and airy interior, perfect for sandwiches, garlic bread, or serving alongside soups and salads. This homemade version is easy to make and delivers bakery-quality results right from your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • Bread Flour – high protein content gives structure and chew
  • Warm Water – activates the yeast and hydrates the dough
  • Active Dry Yeast – leavens the dough for a fluffy rise
  • Sugar – feeds the yeast and adds a hint of sweetness
  • Salt – enhances flavor and balances the dough
  • Olive Oil (optional) – adds moisture and tenderness
  • Egg Wash (optional) – brushed on top for a glossy golden crust

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add salt and oil, then gradually mix in flour to form a soft, tacky dough.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour until doubled.
  5. Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place on a baking sheet.
  6. Let rise again for 30–40 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F. Score the top and brush with egg wash if desired.
  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  9. Chill for 10 minutes before slicing to allow crumb to set.

Notes

  • Use bread flour for the best rise and structure.
  • Ensure yeast is active by proofing it properly.
  • Don’t add too much flour—the dough should be slightly sticky.
  • Use steam (tray of hot water) in the oven for a better crust.
  • Allow the bread to cool before slicing to avoid a gummy texture.
