Crispy Chinese Honey Chicken is a popular takeout-inspired dish featuring golden-fried chicken bites coated in a sticky, sweet-savory honey garlic glaze. It’s easy to make at home and perfect for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

  • Boneless Chicken (breasts or thighs) – tender, juicy base for the dish
  • Cornstarch and Flour – combined to create a crispy, light coating
  • Eggs – bind the coating and help achieve a crunchy texture
  • Honey – sweetens the sauce and gives it a glossy finish
  • Soy Sauce – adds savory umami depth to balance the sweetness
  • Garlic (minced) – adds aromatic and robust flavor to the sauce
  • Rice Vinegar or Lemon Juice – brings acidity to balance the glaze
  • Water or Chicken Broth – lightens the sauce and helps it coat evenly
  • Neutral Oil – for deep or shallow frying the chicken to golden perfection
  • Optional: Red Pepper Flakes, Sesame Seeds, or Scallions – for garnish and added flavor

Instructions

  1. Cut chicken into bite-sized pieces and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  2. Prepare two bowls: one with beaten eggs and one with a cornstarch-flour mix.
  3. Dip chicken into egg, then coat in the dry mix. Press lightly to ensure it sticks.
  4. Heat oil to 350°F and fry chicken in batches until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels or a rack.
  5. In a separate pan, combine honey, soy sauce, garlic, vinegar or lemon juice, and water or broth. Simmer until glossy and slightly thickened.
  6. Add fried chicken to the sauce and toss to coat evenly. Let simmer briefly.
  7. Allow the dish to rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish as desired.

Notes

  • Double-dip the chicken for an extra crispy coating.
  • Keep the oil temperature consistent to avoid soggy or burnt coating.
  • Use fresh garlic for the most robust flavor.
  • Toss the chicken gently in the sauce to maintain its crunch.
  • Let the dish rest before serving so the glaze can set properly.
