Creamed peas are a classic, comforting side dish made with tender green peas in a creamy roux-based sauce. Perfect for holidays, weeknights, or potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • 2 cups green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook green peas by boiling or microwaving until just tender. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  3. Add flour and whisk constantly for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  4. Gradually add milk or cream while whisking to avoid lumps.
  5. Simmer the sauce for a few minutes until thickened.
  6. Add the cooked peas to the sauce and stir to coat evenly.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Serve warm as a side dish.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature milk to avoid lumps in the sauce.
  • Don’t overcook peas to maintain their color and texture.
  • Can be customized with bacon, pearl onions, or herbs.
  • Use cornstarch instead of flour for a gluten-free version.
