Cherry Dr Pepper Cake is a moist, rich chocolate cake made with just 5 ingredients. Infused with the sweet fizz of Cherry Dr Pepper and topped with homemade cherry frosting, this dessert is perfect for holidays, potlucks, and weeknight treats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box Devil’s Food Chocolate Cake Mix (dry)
  • 1½ cups Cherry Dr Pepper (not diet)
  • 1 jar (10 oz) Maraschino Cherries (stems removed, chopped)
  • 1 cup Butter (softened)
  • 3 cups Powdered Sugar (plus up to ½ cup extra if needed)
  • ¼ to cup Maraschino Cherry Juice (from the jar)
  • ¼ cup Chocolate Shavings (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13 baking pan with nonstick spray.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine dry cake mix and Cherry Dr Pepper. Mix on low until smooth and lump-free.
  3. Stir in chopped maraschino cherries.
  4. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 28–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
  6. To make frosting: Cream softened butter and cherry juice together until smooth.
  7. Gradually add powdered sugar (½ cup at a time) and mix until a firm, spreadable frosting consistency is reached.
  8. Spread frosting over cooled cake. Top with whole cherries and optional chocolate shavings.
  9. Refrigerate for 30–60 minutes to set before serving.

Notes

  • Do not use diet soda – it affects texture and flavor.
  • If frosting is too thin, add more powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time.
  • Make sure the cake is completely cooled before frosting to avoid melting.
  • You can substitute Cherry Dr Pepper with regular Dr Pepper plus 2–3 tablespoons of cherry juice.
  • Store in the fridge for up to 7 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
