Southern Fried Cabbage is a comforting, pork-free side dish made with tender cabbage, onions, garlic, and smoked chicken sausage. Savory, flavorful, and ready in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head green cabbage, cored and sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • 12 ounces smoked chicken sausage, sliced
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (alcohol-free)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Remove outer leaves and core from the cabbage, then slice into thin strips.
  2. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add sliced onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add sliced smoked chicken sausage and cook for about 5 minutes until lightly browned.
  6. Stir in sliced cabbage and mix well to coat with the flavorful base.
  7. Pour in chicken broth, cover, and cook for 10–15 minutes until cabbage is tender.
  8. Remove lid and cook uncovered for a few minutes to evaporate excess liquid.
  9. Season with salt, pepper, and optional spices. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Do not overcook the cabbage to avoid a mushy texture.
  • Add smoked paprika for extra depth if desired.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat in a skillet with a splash of broth to maintain moisture.
  • This dish can be made vegetarian by omitting sausage and using vegetable broth.
