Creamy Cabbage Casserole is a rich and comforting baked dish made with tender cabbage, heavy cream, and melted cheddar cheese. This easy oven-baked casserole is perfect as a family dinner side dish or a cozy holiday favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1½ cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Remove outer cabbage leaves, rinse thoroughly, core, and chop into bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped cabbage, onion, and garlic. Sauté for 8–10 minutes until slightly softened.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, salt, pepper, paprika, and 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Stir well.
  5. Spread the sautéed cabbage mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  6. Pour the cream and cheese mixture evenly over the cabbage.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top. Add breadcrumbs if using.
  8. Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.

Notes

  • Sautéing the cabbage first helps prevent excess moisture and keeps the casserole creamy.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded cheese.
  • You can substitute half-and-half for heavy cream, though the sauce may be slightly thinner.
  • Allow the casserole to rest before serving for the best texture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
