Candied yams are a classic Southern side dish made with tender sweet potatoes simmered in a buttery brown sugar sauce with warm spices, creating a rich and comforting flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium sweet potatoes (about lbs), peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water or orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into even rounds or chunks.
  2. Place a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat and melt the butter.
  3. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, salt, and water or juice, stirring until smooth.
  4. Add the sliced sweet potatoes to the pan and gently toss to coat in the sauce.
  5. Cover and simmer on low heat for 25–30 minutes, stirring carefully.
  6. Remove the lid and cook for a few more minutes until the sauce thickens.
  7. Serve warm with the syrup spooned over the yams.

Notes

  • Slice sweet potatoes evenly for uniform cooking.
  • Cook on low heat to prevent burning and mushy texture.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust sweetness or spice as needed.
  • Can be made a day ahead and reheated gently.
