Candied orange peel is a classic homemade citrus treat made by simmering orange rinds in sugar syrup until tender, glossy, and sweet, perfect for baking, snacking, or gifting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large oranges
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Extra sugar for coating (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the oranges thoroughly and cut off both ends.
  2. Score the peel into quarters and remove it from the fruit.
  3. Slice the peels into even strips.
  4. Place peels in a saucepan, cover with water, bring to a boil, then drain.
  5. Repeat the boiling and draining process two more times to remove bitterness.
  6. In the same saucepan, combine sugar and fresh water and heat until dissolved.
  7. Add the boiled peels and simmer gently until translucent and glossy.
  8. Remove peels and place on a wire rack or parchment paper to dry.
  9. Once dry, roll in sugar if desired and store.

Notes

  • Boiling the peels multiple times is key to removing bitterness.
  • Use thick-skinned oranges for best texture.
  • Dry completely before storing to prevent stickiness.
  • Optional sugar coating adds sparkle and sweetness.
