Butter Tart Squares are rich dessert bars made with a buttery shortbread crust and a gooey caramel-style filling inspired by classic Canadian butter tarts, perfect for holidays and sharing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for crust)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for filling)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix softened butter, powdered sugar, flour, and salt until crumbly.
  3. Press mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the crust.
  4. Bake crust for 15 minutes, then remove from oven.
  5. In another bowl, whisk melted butter, brown sugar, eggs, corn syrup, vanilla, and vinegar until smooth.
  6. Stir in nuts or raisins if using.
  7. Pour filling evenly over the partially baked crust.
  8. Return to oven and bake for 30–35 minutes until edges are set and center is slightly soft.
  9. Cool completely in the pan, then chill briefly before slicing into squares.

Notes

  • Do not overbake or the filling will become firm.
  • Chilling before slicing helps create clean edges.
  • Maple syrup adds deeper flavor but creates a softer filling.
  • Store squares in a cool place to maintain texture.
