Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups chocolate cake or brownies, cut into chunks
  • 2 cups cherry pie filling (or sweetened fresh cherries)
  • 2 cups chocolate pudding (instant or homemade)
  • 2 cups whipped cream or whipped topping
  • 2 tablespoons Kirsch or cherry juice (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chocolate shavings or curls (for garnish)
  • Fresh cherries for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut or crumble the chocolate cake or brownies into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
  2. If using canned or fresh cherries, prepare the filling by simmering with sugar and thickening agents as needed.
  3. Prepare the chocolate pudding according to package directions or use pre-made pudding.
  4. In a large trifle bowl or individual jars, begin layering with a base of chocolate cake pieces.
  5. Add a layer of cherry filling over the cake, then a layer of chocolate pudding, and top with whipped cream.
  6. Repeat the layers until the bowl is full, ending with whipped cream on top.
  7. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.
  8. Before serving, garnish with chocolate shavings and fresh cherries if desired.

Notes

  • Use slightly dry or day-old cake for better texture.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, replace Kirsch with cherry juice or syrup.
  • Trifle can be made up to 24 hours in advance for best flavor blending.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
