Baked Cabbage Casserole is a creamy, oven-baked comfort dish made with tender cabbage, rich cheese sauce, and a golden crispy topping. This easy family recipe is perfect for holidays, potlucks, or cozy weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1½ cups milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Remove outer cabbage leaves, rinse thoroughly, core, and chop into bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and cook until translucent, then stir in garlic.
  4. Add chopped cabbage and sauté for 8–10 minutes until slightly softened.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine milk, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Stir well.
  6. Spread the sautéed cabbage evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Pour the creamy mixture over the cabbage, ensuring even coverage.
  8. Top with remaining cheddar, mozzarella cheese, and breadcrumbs.
  9. Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
  10. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.

Notes

  • Sautéing the cabbage first prevents excess moisture and keeps the casserole creamy.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded varieties.
  • For a thicker sauce, whisk 1 tablespoon of flour into the milk mixture before pouring.
  • You can substitute olive oil for butter if desired.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • This casserole can be frozen for up to 2 months after cooling completely.
